Back in the 90’s, I was managing the supplement and beauty department at the Original Irvine Ranch Market, in Costa Mesa. I made it a regular practice to try as many products as possible so I could make good recommendations to our customers, based on my experience.
One day, I had a gentleman come in as I was setting up a display that included a book and wheat grass supplements. He asked me what I thought about wheatgrass. At that point I had only read a few things and told him I didn’t know much and wasn’t sure if I really believed all the hype about it. He chuckled and said he believed it to be one of the most powerful things a person could use.
He was a chiropractor and worked with terminally ill patients and said he had seen it work miracles. He said if you really want to test it out, take the pulp and soak it in the juice and put it on an infected tooth. It draws infection from the body and will get rid of the pain and infection. I thanked him for the information as in my head, I thought, “yeah, right”.
A few weeks later, my boyfriend had a wisdom tooth that had become infected and needed to be pulled but he didn’t have the money to pay for it. I told him about the wheatgrass, and he tried it. There was a juice place not far from where I worked, so he stopped there every day for a week and sure enough, the pain and infection went away. I became a true believer!
Here are some things to know about Wheatgrass:
It has a high concentration of chlorophyll that supports healthy digestion and detoxification.
Good source of fiber.
It is a good source of beta carotene and antioxidants and is an excellent source of vitamins A, C and E. More B complex than Spinach.
It is gluten free and ideal for those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease.
It contains enzymes that help lower blood sugar levels, beneficial for Type 2 diabetics.
Studies suggest a potential for lowering total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
High antioxidant content may protect against heart disease, cancer, arthritis and neurodegenerative diseases.
Wheatgrass that is freshly juiced has been a popular way to get the nutrients but requires a special extractor to break down the plant cells. However, grown in trays, it lacks the nutrient density that ground grown Wheatgrass has. The powdered and tablet forms are the next best thing to fresh. I have used Wheatgrass tablets and powder to fight chest infections and tooth issues. However, there are so many on the market it is hard to know which one is the best quality and really lives up to what they claim.
The company I strongly support is Pines. Read more about them www.wheatgrass.com They are in Kansas and have been growing wheatgrass since 1975. By minimally processing the product, they can keep as much of the healthy amino acids, minerals and vitamins necessary for human health.
When I feel like my body is trying to fight off a “bug”, I start taking 10 tables of wheatgrass three times a day along with two garlic capsules, zinc and astragalus. This seems to be the magic bullet to help me stay healthy, especially during the cold and flu season. If you have problems taking tablets, it is easy to use the powder in smoothies.
It is available on the Pines page or at Amazon.

I use the powdered form in a smoothie or just mix it in a glass of water and drink it. You can use it in all kinds of recipes like muffins, cookies or breads. A great way to bump up the nutrients!
